Jamaica's National Book Awards 2013

Jamaica’s publishing sector is getting ready to don its glitz and glamour for the 12th National Book Awards set to take place on December 5, 2013, at 6:00 pm. The National Book Awards, staged by the Book Industry Association of Jamaica will see the awards selected decided by a jury as well as those books chosen by the public. The BIAJ will also name the recipients of its Trailblazer award and a special award.

The Awards, created to celebrate excellence is Jamaican publishing and writing is a biennial event and highlights great work in trade books, text books, fiction, non-fiction, journals, magazines and children’s books.

The publishing awards are decided by a jury of judges. This year Ross Sheil is the Chief Judge. The BIAJ received 65 entries for the publishing awards in 13 categories with the largest number in the design category, vying for best adult cover.

Twenty-two entries were received in the Readers’ Choice Awards with a whopping eleven entries in the adult creative writing category. The Readers Choice, selected online as well as via voting in selected bookstores, features four categories: Children’s Picture Book, Children’s Chapter Book, Adult Creative Writing and Adult Non-Fiction.

The 2013 National Book Awards will be hosted by comedian Dr. Michael Abrahams and will take place at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Teaching and Research Complex, University of the West Indies, Mona.
