Thirty-Six new media pieces, representing artists from the Caribbean, Europe and the United States are lining up for the 2013 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, Port of Spain. The new media programme, presented by TTFF in partnership with ARC Magazine, is now in its third year and is adding some new elements including a new media prize of TT$5,000, awarded to the most promising artist.

The 2013 screenings of the experimental films will take place at the Medulla Art Gallery and features 27 artists from 15 countries with works ranging from as short as under a minute in length, to up to 84 minutes. The films will be screened daily in exhibition style.

The new media programme opens on 20 September at 6:00pm with a projection video installation by Jamaican artist Olivia McGilchrist. The addition of live performances is one the new elements of the New Media showcase which will have nightly live events to complement the day time screenings. The screenings will be closed with a performance from Trinidadian artist Rodell Warner.

The Films4Peace programme returns as a part of the new media screenings for the second year. A part of the commemoration of World Peace Day, a part of the PUMA.Peace  global initiative, with a special screening and artist talks on the evening of 21 September.

On the TTFF website, co-curator and ARC editor in chief Holly Bynoe spoke to the growth and increasing prominence of performative and installation art in the contemporary art world.

“Video, sound, performative and installation art are burgeoning frontier fields, and it is necessary to showcase how Caribbean artists are striving to identify themselves with the evolving milieu,” Bynoe said.

“The selection of work here is irreverent, self-motivated and bold, a clear sign that new media works are now an embedded part of our cultural and artistic terrain,” she said.

The new media screenings take place daily at the Medulla Art Gallery, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, from 20-27 September, 2013. The Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival runs 17 September to 1 October, 2013.
