Reel Rock Animation Lands Deal With France's Red Frog
Just a year shy of its first anniversary, Reel Rock GSW Animation is stepping outside of the small pond and into the international seas by landing a deal with French Animation Studio, Red Frog Studios, a leading producer of content for broadcast television, online webisodes and apps for tablets and smart phones. The contract, made for an undisclosed sum, will see Reel Rock producing 13 episodes of the ‘Quiz Time’ a show targeting children ages 2-6 and airs on Disney Junior in France.
In recent years there has been several efforts across the Caribbean region to develop animation studios and tap into the lucrative market that has helped to significantly stimulate the economies in Canada, India and Korea. However, the Reel Rock - Red Frog deal is believed to be a first for the region with a Caribbean company animating for a major international network.
“This is an amazing achievement for us, considering that we are still less than one year old,” said Wayne Sinclair, Executive Director of Reel Rock. “ It is a testament to the very hard work put in by our dedicated and super talented team of, animators and illustrators and this augurs well not just for us, but the Jamaican and Caribbean animation industry.”
Reel Rock’s investors and lenders are, of course, thrilled by news of the deal. Milverton Reynolds, Managing Director, Development Bank of Jamaica, congratulated Mr. Sinclair and his team and lauded the company’s achievement.
“The company is a great example of local entrepreneurs who are not only providing employment and an outlet for local creative talent, but also earning valuable foreign exchange for Jamaica,” said Mr. Reynolds.
Reynold’s sentiments were echoed by Lisa Bell, Managing Director at EXIM Bank. “We are pleased that Reel Rock GSW is getting the opportunity to make its mark internationally,” she said. Bell noted that the EXIM Bank would continue its support of the creative industries and advised that Reel Rock’s achievement may well be a door opener for other entrepreneurs wanting to work in the animation industry.
Sinclair also pointed out that Jampro and Canadian software company Toon Boom was also integral to their growth. “Toon Boom’s software was a crucial component of this opportunity. I had met briefly with one of the principals of Red Frog last year at the Annecy (France) Animation Festival and struck up a conversation. But Red Frog is a Toon Boom (software) studio as well and this established a common technological platform between us. So we did a test and they decided that we were good enough to work with them”, he said.
Sinclair also confirmed that preliminary discussions with Red Frog are underway for additional work relating to other aspects of their distribution pipeline.
