Top Jamaican Bloggarati of 2012 Named

Kimroy Bailey

Kimroy Bailey, a recent graduate of the University of Technology, was dubbed ruler of Jamaica’s bloggersphere when he copped the  Blogger of the Year (2012) trophy at the close of the third annual Jamaica Blog Awards.  Bailey also copped awards for Best Personal Blog and Best Blog Post for ‘100% Renewable Jamaica’, a post which explored the possibility of Jamaica using solely renewable energy.

Founder and organizer of the awards, Corve DaCosta explained that this year received a significant increase in the number of nominations. Last year there were just over 180 nominations while this year there was almost 300, which was whittled down to over 100 finalists. DaCosta noted however that it is not only the increase in finalists that is remarkable.

“What is interesting this year is that the standard is really good,” he told Susumba. During his opening remarks DaCosta had also suggested that the year’s crop of finalists provide a good indication of the state of blogging in the nation.

Jomarie Malcolm (right) copped awards for her blogs on twitter and tumblr The Jamaica Blog Awards, which recognize different types and themes for blogs, are a very welcome concept and highlight the island’s burgeoning social media landscape. However the producers of the show have a lot to learn about staging an event as Saturday's awards stumbled and blundered along screaming of inexperience in event planning.

Even so, it was a happy night for members of the bloggarati who snagged awards especially those toting home multiple statuettes at the end of the night. These bloggers who would have their mantlepiece (should those still exist) a little more crowded after the event included Jomarie Malcolm who snagged awards for Best Twitter Micro Blogger and Best Tumblr Blog for Lace and Zippers as well as the Hashcon 2012 prize for the post ‘She Rose’. Malcolm admitted to being deliberately provocative with the suggestive title of her Tumblr blog Lace and Zippers.

“I'm just trying to capture all the different layers of Jamaican culture,” Malcolm said  also explaining that she hopes to expand into covering events as well. “It's got a very provocative title, but thEmma Lewis collects her award for Best Jamaican Focused Blog from Corve DaCostaat was done deliberately.”

Kelroy Brown also copped two awards for separate blogs. His Geezam.com earned the award for Best Technology Blog while he was given the 2012 Achievement Award for Jamaipanese.com through which he explores his love for Japanese culture, and also used to raise funds to visit Japan.

DaCosta also announced that next year the awards would step beyond national boundaries and attempt to become a regional award. The Jamaica Blog Awards 2012 took place at South Beach Cafe, New Kingston, on Saturday, January 19, 2013.
