Jambiz International and Edna Manley College Vie for Top Actor Boy Award

Saving Alligator High receives 12 nominations including nods for the entire cast

Patrick Brown’s most recent comedy Saving Alligator High swept the 2014 Actor Boy Awards scooping up 13 nominations. The wins helped producers Jambiz International repeat the feat of snagging a total of 19 nominations between Saving Alligator High and Funny Kind’a Love. Not surprisingly, Saving Alligator High tops the list of plays vying for top award for Best Production.

Funny Kind'a Love also makes the list of plays receiving the nod for the top award. Both plays also received nominations for directing, best comedy and best new Jamaican play. Interestingly, the entire cast of Saving Alligator High received nominations with Glen Campbell being nominated for Best Actor, Sharee Elise nominated for Best Actress, Courtney Wilson and David Crossgill nominated for Best Supporting Actor while Camille Davis and Sakina Deer each earned a nod for Best Supporting Actress. 

The three other productions making it to the list all emerged from the School of Drama at the Edna Manley College. Derek Walcott’s Dream on Monkey Mountain, directed by Trevor Nairne received a total of eight nominations, while Wild Alice, directed by Pierre Lemaire received seven. The third EMC to scoop up major nominations is Dennis Scott’s An Echo in the Bone, directed by Eugene Williams, which earned six nominations.

Akeem Mignott earns a Best Supporting Actor nod for Laff It OffOliver Mair’s comedy revue Laff It Off was amongst the productions that copped the most award, going away with a total of nine nominations including those for Best Revue, and Best Comedy. 

The Independent Actors Movement third installation of Anancy Chaptaz (Monkey Bizniz) also found favour with the judges earning eight nominations including Best Costume Design, Best Musical, and Best Children’s Theatre.

Dahlia Harris’ Her Last Cry also received multiple nominations. Her Last Cry received a nod for Best New Jamaica Play, Best Drama, while Tesfa Edwards earned a nomination for Best Actor in a New Role. Harris’ haul was further strengthened by the second play she has in the 2014 ABA race, God Go Wid Yuh.

God Go Wid Yuh, a musical revue, scooped up five nominations including Shanique Brown’s Best Actress in a Supporting role nomination and Carl Samuels’ Best Actor in a Supporting role nod. The production has also been nominated for Best Revue. 

Basil Dawkins’ Divorce Papers also picked up multiple nods. The play has been nominated for Best Drama and Best New Jamaican Play while Ruth Ho Shing copped a nod for Best Actress in a Lead Role.
