'Welcome to America Again'? Caribbean Musical gets Extended Run

The cast of Karl Williams' Welcome to America - A Caribbean Musical

With immigration as one of the hot-button topics currently gripping the United States, the debut of Karl William’s musical Welcome to America - A Caribbean Musical could not have been better timed. And that timing seems to be paying off. Initially scheduled for a limited 5-show run, producers Braata Productions are bringing the show back this weekend due to overwhelming demand.

Welcome to America is a tale of illegal immigration in the pursuit of a dream. Sabrina Barnes arrives in America with star-spangled dreams of stardom but gets slapped by the realities on the ground in her newly adopted home country.

The play is directed by Yudelka Heyer and features Fitgi Saint Louis as Sabrina, Andrew Clarke as Elijah - her friend and possible romantic interest - and Dominique Allen Lawson as Barry a former entertainer turned talent agent. The cast is completed by Shuga Henry, Carlene Taylor, Rachael Washington, Sofia Klimovsky, O’Shun Brown, Imani Williams, Vinette Matthews, Asuza Sheshe Dance, Christine Thomas and Rafael Nadal.

The play also features book by Karl O’Brian Williams, with music and lyrics by Williams, Clarke and Joel Edwards. Movement was choreographed by Courtney Ffrench with dramaturgy by Janel Scarborough.

Clarke, who is also executive producer of the show, notes that a part of the success of Welcome to America has to do with the timeliness of its themes or migration, hope, and aspirations.

“It is the hot button issue in our country right now and many of those who did see the show told us they either know someone who has been through the same situations depicted or that they have experienced something similar themselves…. The show has indeed touched a nerve right now, in very profound ways,” Clarke said.

In the same release, Clarke explained that last weekend’s staging (April 20 - 23) saw patrons arriving from as far away as Delaware and Connecticut to the Queens venue, only to bump into a sold out show.
